1. Heidelberg University

3. Heidelberg Castle
One of the most famous ruins in Germany, Heidelberg Castle is a symbol of the city. The castle overlooks the old town of Heidelberg as well as the Neckar River. Its striking ruins, combined with its historical significance and romantic setting, make it a classic symbol of German Romanticism.
Heidelberg Castle date back to the early 13th century, when it was initially constructed as a fortified medieval castle. Today, the castle complex includes a museum that showcases artifacts from the castle’s history, the German Pharmacy Museum, an enormous wine barrel called Heidelberg Tun as well as several towers and rooms to visit.Â
Heidelberg Castle is one of Germany’s most popular tourist destinations, and the castle hosts a variety of events, including concerts, theater performances, and the famous Heidelberg Castle Festival, which features operas and classical music.

5. The German Pharmacy Museum (Deutches Apothekenmuseum)
While most visitors rush through Heidelberg Castle focused on the famous wine barrel and panoramic views, I discovered one of the city’s most fascinating attractions tucked away in the castle’s ground floor: the German Pharmacy Museum. Trust me, even if you’ve never given much thought to historical medicine, this place is so cool!
What makes this museum special is how it connects to Heidelberg’s history as a leading medical research center.Â

6. Old Heidelberg
The Altstadt (Old Town), is the heart of Heidelberg, characterized by its narrow, cobblestone streets, baroque buildings, and small squares. A stroll through Old Heidelberg reveals a city rich in history and charm, with landmarks like the Church of the Holy Spirit, the Old Bridge, and the Philosopher’s Walk offering a walk through history as well as picturesque views.
Fun fact: did you know that the Old Town’s main street, Hauptstraße, is one of Europe’s longest pedestrian zones?
7. Church of the Holy Spirit
Don’t make the same mistake as me of just admiring the Church of the Holy Spirit from the outside – the €2 entrance fee to climb the tower is possibly the best money you’ll spend in Heidelberg. After 208 steps you’re rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree view of the city.

8. Christmas Markets
Germany is known for its Christmas markets, and Heidelberg is no exception! During the holiday season, Heidelberg’s Old Town transforms into a festive wonderland with its Christmas Market. The market spreads across several squares, featuring wooden stalls selling handcrafted goods, treats, and mulled wine. The Heidelberg Christmas Market is especially popular and attracts visitors from all over the world to experience the holiday spirit in this historic setting.
9. Jesuitenkirche
Built in the early 18th century the Jesuit Church is one of the most important baroque religious buildings in the region. It has the characteristic red sandstone facade and relative simple interior but it’s such a beautiful landmark that is often overlooked by visitors.Â
It’s completely free to enter the church.
10. Alte Brücke (The Old Bridge)Â
Officially called the Karl Theodor Bridge, this is (together with the Heidelberg Castle) one of the city’s most iconic landmarks! Though there’s nothing extraordinary about the bridge, it is part of the city’s long history.Â
Fun fact: It’s actually the ninth bridge in the same spot – previous wooden bridges were destroyed by floods, ice, and war – but since it was t’s the first bridge to be built of stone in 1788, it has survived.Â
11. Neckar River Sightseeing Cruise
If you have the time, a River Cruise is a MUST when in Heidelberg. From the water, you’ll capture the castle, Old Bridge, and city skyline from a unique angle without the crowds on the street!
Pro tip: Book a late afternoon cruise. The lighting is perfect as the sun begins to set and you’ll get the perfect golden hour photos. Remember to get to the dock 15 minutes early to grab a spot on the upper deck!
