Saxon Switzerland, located in the eastern part of Germany, is home to one of the country’s most iconic natural landmarks. The Bastei Bridge.
Set against a backdrop of rock formations, deep gorges, and scenic views of the Elbe River, the Bastei Bridge is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and photographers.
In this guide, we’ll explore everything you need to know about visiting this stunning site.
The Bridge in Saxon Switzerland Germany
The Bastei Bridge is a sandstone structure that blends harmoniously into the surrounding natural beauty of Saxon Switzerland National Park. Built in 1851 to connect rock formations within the area, the bridge spans 76 meters across the Elbe River gorge and has incredible panoramic views of the landscape surrounding it.
Originally the Bastei Bridge was made of wood, but was rebuilt with sandstone to accommodate the increasing number of visitors.
Hiking Bastei Bridge
Saxon Switzerland National Park’s most iconic attraction is the Bastei Bridge, which offers awe-inspiring panoramic views.
Hiking to the Bastei Bridge is a must-do when visiting the park. An early morning hike to the bridge allows you to enjoy the site without the crowds.
It might be a bit misleading calling the walk here a hike. If you’re looking for a short and accessible hike, the Bastei Bridge is only about a 15-20 minute walk from the nearest parking area.
For more adventurous hikers, longer trails are all around the surrounding park, allowing you to go deeper into the rock formations and valleys.
How to Get There
Getting to the Bastei Bridge is relatively straightforward, whether you’re traveling by car or using public transportation.
By Car
If you’re driving, the Bastei Bridge is easily accessible from major cities like Dresden, which is only a 40-minute drive away. If you’re coming from Berlin, expect a journey of around two to three hours. Luckily this attraction has several signs directing you to the bridge and the nearby parking facilities.
By Public Transportation
The Bastei Bridge can also be reached via a combination of train and bus. Start by taking a train from Dresden to the town of Pirna, which is well-connected to the Saxon Switzerland region. From Pirna, a bus service runs regularly to the Bastei Bridge (next to the parking lot).
Parking at Bastei Bridge
Parking near the Bastei Bridge is convenient, with designated parking areas available for visitors. The main parking lot is about a 15-minute walk from the bridge itself. Keep in mind that parking can fill up quickly during peak tourist season.
The ticket system is a bit strange.
The parking lot has an automatic licence plate recognition system – so if your car is connected to easypark – you don’t have to do anything. If not, go to the ticket machines and type in your licence plate number and pay from 2 options:
The minimum parking time is 4 hours which is €7
A day ticket is €12 (valid until midnight as overnight stays are not allowed)
What to Do Here
While the Bastei Bridge is the centerpiece of this region, there are several other attractions and activities to enjoy during your visit. Here are a few highlights:
- Explore the rock formations: The bridge leads to several viewing platforms and pathways that allow you to explore the surrounding rock formations.
- Visit the Neurathen Castle ruins: Just beyond the bridge lies the remnants of the medieval Neurathen Castle. This fortress, built into the rock formations, offers a glimpse into the history of the region and has information about the area’s past.
- Photography: The Bastei Bridge and its surroundings are a photographer’s paradise. Whether you’re capturing the early morning mist or the golden hour over the landscape, the opportunities for stunning photos are just endless.
Is the Bastei Bridge Worth It?
Absolutely! The Bastei Bridge offers visitors a unique combination of natural beauty, history, and accessible adventure. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or simply looking for a day trip from Dresden or Berlin, the bridge and its surroundings make for an unforgettable experience. The panoramic views alone are worth the trip, but the additional attractions, like the Neurathen Castle ruins and nearby hiking trails, make it even more special.
