First of all – CONGRATS on starting out. No matter if you have already traveled solo before, if you’re going for the first time or are just considering it🌟 You’ve come to the right place, if you’re looking for the BEST advice traveling solo on a budget.
💡I’m sure you have already scoured Google BUT let me tell you what you ACTUALLY need💡
STOP over-paying for flights!
🔑Just follow these simple steps:
1. Open a new incognito-window in Google
2. Go to SkyScanner.com
3. Choose “explore everywhere”
—> this is by far the most important step! You need to be open-minded about possible destinations, when you want to save as much as possible!
🌍There’s a whole world to explore!
Other ways to travel without breaking the bank:
• Use trains / interrail instead of flying
• Pack light and don’t check in bags!
• Use reward programs!
Flexibility is key – be open to last-minute deals and off-peak travel for lower costs.
This goes hand in hand with getting good flight deals.
Embrace hostels and shared accommodations for a wallet-friendly stay.
Hostels are known for being a wallet-friendly option.
If you’re not yet comfortable with shared accommodation – stay at International chain Hostels – It’s easier to make friends, and the bigger hostels often host something at the hostel or a daytrip in the city etc. So you won’t feel as alone. They are usually also a lot more clean and structured.
Other ways to save Money on accommodation:
- Sign up for Trusted House Sitters
Offer to take care of someones home (and pets) while they’re away. All free of charge.
- Sign up for WorldPackers
Work in exchange for a free stay.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
We ALL need help when navigating a new city – whether it’s finding a place, figuring out where the bus stop is or recommendations. No one will think you’re an annoying tourist or weird – just ask!
Use public transportation or walk
This is one of the KILLERS when it comes to your budget. STOP taking Ubers or Taxis.
Don’t travel in peak season
Rule nr. 1 of budget travel is to travel in shoulder season or off-season if possible. You will not only save money but also avoid the crowds!
Not Getting Travel Insurance
Don’t leave home without it! From medical emergencies to trip cancellations, travel insurance can be a lifesaver – AND a money saver. If, God forbid, you’re injured on your trip – not being insured can cost A LOT of money in Medical Fees, transportation to Hospital (especially if you’re in a remote area) as well as transport home.

Cook your own meals (or at least some of them)
I ate out 3 times when traveling Italy solo.
Go on expensive private tours
At the end of the day – is it really worth it? Private tours can be multiple times as expensive as normal tours that take you to the same places. Additionally: Group tours are a great way to meet other travelers!

Exchanging Currency at the Airport
A silent money-sucker. Currency exchange rates at airports are HORRIBLE. If you can – wait until you find an ATM in the city you’re visiting. You will save yourself a lot of unnecessary fees!
Look out for free walking tours and city passes to discover attractions without spending a fortune.
FREE things are music to any budget travellers ears.
Bring a quick-dry towel everywhere: you never know when you’re going to need it.
This is a MUST when traveling to warmer countries. Imagine seeing a beautiful hidden lake on your hike and not being able to jump into it? Hell no🙅🏻♀️ OR having to rent towels at your hostel – OR worse; not having any towels.

Don’t bite over more than you can chew
You’ve heard it a million times – but take the damn advice! You won’t enjoy an overpacked program. If you are traveling for longer than 2 weeks at a time – TAKE A DAY OFF. Slow travel is also cheaper – don’t rush to the bus or waste time and money on unnecessary travel.
Pack LIGHT
Rookie mistake 101 is overpacking – you have been warned!
